Investing for Impact : UK Place-based investment

Deprivation, poverty and entrenched place-based inequality have been further exacerbated by COVID in communities across the UK. The publication of the Impact Investing Institute’s white paper “Scaling up institutional investment for place-based impact” has highlighted how investing in real estate offers the opportunity to be part of the solution to these societal concerns and aligns with the UK government’s ‘levelling up’ agenda. This, at a time when Government finances are under enormous pressure as debt levels have exploded, resulting in UK Debt/GDP ratios now at levels not seen for 50 years.

UK pension schemes, especially Local Government (LGPS), but also corporate pension schemes and foundations have substantial patient capital to invest and seek opportunities for risk-adjusted returns and secure cashflows. Place-based investment bring opportunities to deliver both financial returns alongside social and environmental impact outcomes.

In this panel we will evaluate the concept of place-based investment and discuss the findings from the white paper along with potential challenges and possible solutions for investors who seek to deploy capital in this way.
